Dear Visitor,
My name is Arnold Bresky, M.D. and I have seen over 2,000 memory impaired patients and their caregivers over the last two decades and I have pioneered many wellness programs for seniors.
Stay with me here for 10 minutes, because the information I will share with you can potentially help save your's and your loved ones memory & help ensure life long brain health.
On this page I will share some of the most recent findings around memory research, an excerpt from a news article on brain health, and I will share the basics of my 9 point system that helps you regain, maintain and preserve your brain health.
Did you know?
At age 40 fibers in your brain called "myelin" start to degrade, most people will see this in the form of “senior moments.” Ever had one of those? There are 78 million U.S. baby boomers now over this critical age of 40, which has never happened in history.
1 in 4 families are currently affected by dementia.
We will need over 200,000 new caregivers every year to cope with the care of our aging population.
With staggering numbers like these, it is apparent that brain health and memory wellness should be important to all of us. Especially since the degradation that begins what are known as “senior moments” begins at age 40.
What this means is that if you are near 40, over 40, or even if you’re 90, you should make a pledge to yourself TODAY to take the proven steps to regain, maintain and preserve your brain health.
CBS News reports on a study done at UCLA proves this deterioration begins at age 40.
Study: Brain Speed Peaks At Age 40(1)
Exercise — Both Mental And Physical — Helps Slow The Decline
Think achy joints are the main reason we slow down as we get older? Blame the brain, too: The part in charge of motion may start a gradual downhill slide at age 40.
How fast you can throw a ball or run or swerve a steering wheel depends on how speedily brain cells fire off commands to muscles. Fast firing depends on good insulation for your brain's wiring.
Now new research suggests that in middle age, even healthy people begin to lose some of that insulation in a motor-control part of the brain - at the same rate that their speed subtly slows.
That helps explain why "it's hard to be a world-class athlete after 40," concludes Dr. George Bartzokis, a neurologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who led the work. To Bartzokis, the brain is like the Internet. Speedy movement depends on bandwidth, which in the brain is myelin, a special sheet of fat that coats nerve fibers. "We knew at some age you peak and there's a sense it would disintegrate as you grow older. But we didn't have a sense of where that age would be," says Dr. Zoe Arvanitakis, a neurologist at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center.
While much more research is needed, Bartzokis has some practical advice: Keeping active and treating high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes already are deemed important for good brain health. But physical and mental activity also may stimulate myelin repair, while unused neural pathways wouldn't send out a "help" signal, he says.
The Silver Lining
Although the reality of hearing the myelin in your brain begins to degrade at 40 is discouraging, the great news is that you are no longer powerless against it!
Not all that long ago it was believed that you were born with all of the brain cells you would ever have.
The exciting truth is…that is a myth! The biggest breakthrough in the fight against memory loss is that science has now proven that you can grow new brain cells and brain connections at any age!
The problem for me as a Preventive Gerontologist was by the time patients were sent to my office by their Neurologist, wife, daughter or other caregiver…it was very many years too late!
This scenario was becoming more frequent and severe in my practice. It was a painful truth for more and more families. Now that people are becoming more aware of my program and that the earlier they start the better, they are eager to attain the tools necessary to be empowered to start on their personal journey to better brain health and memory wellness.
You can take control to regain, maintain and preserve your brain health.
In 1996, I implemented my senior wellness protocol called Brain Tune Up® on severe Alzheimer’s patients at the El Molino facility in Pasadena, CA. My blend of spiritual, mental and wellness therapies resulted in an improvement in their mood, less acting out, reduced sundowning and wandering, as well as improved recognition of their surroundings.
Energized from my findings at El Molino, I continued on my crusade for brain wellness. Treating, lecturing and training thousands of dementia, Alzheimer's and geriatric patients along with their caregivers using my Brain Tune Up® System and utilizing the over 2,000 original brain games, brain exercises and art therapies I had developed to give my patients new, exciting, challenging, intellectual work every day.
In 1999, a groundbreaking study that validated the activities I had been teaching patients for years was published by Princeton University scientist, Elizabeth Gould. The study showed that neurogenesis, the formation and development of nerve cells, does in fact occur in several regions of the brain, a concept that had previously been thought impossible.
In 2005, I received a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation to perform a six-month test of my Brain Tune Up® System on 90 to 96 year old patients at the Eisenberg Village Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda, CA. Third-party memory testing performed on patients before and after their participation in the Brain Tune Up® resulted in mini-mental state examination test scores increasing 30% as well as self-reports from participants found a 67% improvement in their quality of life.
So, whether you are 40 or 96 years old, the Brain Tune Up® System will provide value to your life.
Before I explain the system, I will share an article from the Daily news.
Art therapy may be helping patients improve memory(2)
Daily News Interview with Tony Castro, Staff Writer
Bresky, who gave up his obstetrics practice 12 years ago to work on preventing memory loss, calls his program a "Brain Tune Up," and includes a multidisciplinary approach that also includes the use of music.
Patients like octogenarian Yolanda Wood of Camarillo swear by Bresky's program, which is covered by Medicare. "I've been a patient of his for years, and I do his art therapy program all the time," Wood says. "I'm always drawing, and it's helped me. It's even helped me pass my driver's license test."
Last spring, Wood was notified by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles that, because of her age, she would have to retake her driving examination. "I went to Dr. Bresky and I said, `Am I going to be able to do this?' And he said, `Of course,' and we went to work on learning all the driving laws. When I took the test, I made a perfect 100."
"The brain works through numbers and patterns," he says. "The numbers are on the left side of your brain, the patterns are on the right side. What I'm doing is connecting the two sides. "And we're getting the brain to grow new cells. It's called `brain plasticity.'
The brain changes physically to the environment." And his program, Bresky believes, will become even more valuable as aging baby boomers boost the number of people suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia to record levels.
Bresky, who gave up his obstetrics practice 12 years ago to work on preventing memory loss, calls his program a "Brain Tune Up," and includes a multidisciplinary approach that also includes the use of music.
"My program improves the memory function to enhance a person's quality of life," he says "It got me concentrating, and I like that," said Molly Morgan.
"The more I did this, the more I enjoyed it," said Irene Kowalski.
"The way you judge a society when you go back and study anthropology is how they treated their very young and their very old," says Bresky. "I did obstetrics for 35 years, and now I'm a preventive gerontologist. I teach people how to age gracefully by improving their memory."
What is the Brain Tune Up® System?
There are 9 Points to the Brain Tune Up® that need to be performed everyday to accomplish your overall goal of maximizing the function of your brain and immune system as these are the 2 biomarkers of aging.
The 9 simple steps you need to take each day are as follows…
Fun and Laughter
Enjoyment and laughter helps release endorphins in the brain and elevates mood as well as improves the immune system and opens blood vessels in the brain.
Relaxation, Meditation and Prayer
Practicing relaxation, meditation and prayer helps lower stress. Chronic stress shrinks the hippocampus, the area of the brain associated with memory. It also produces cortisol, which blocks glucose from the brain.
Music Therapy
Properly utilized music enhances the brain’s ability to learn and to improve its state. Sleep Eight hours of uninterrupted sleep allows the brain to go into deep REM sleep, the period where the brain heals itself and memories form.
Physical Exercise
Physical exercise improves circulation and proper blood flow to the brain helping stem cells in the brain to grow.
Brain Tune Up® Eating Plan – Based on the Mediterranean Diet
The basic principles are to eat fresh, seasonal, whole foods low in fat and high in omega 3’s. The Mediterranean diet can lower the risk of serious cognitive impairment by 40%. Omega 3’s help retain myelin brain tissue.
Hydration
Drinking at least six 8 oz. servings of water daily helps flush toxins from body tissues since myelin, a brain tissue, is easily destroyed by a buildup of toxins.
Brain Exercises and Art Therapy
Brain exercises and art stimulate both hemispheres of the brain. Kindness Simple acts of kindness improve mental outlook and disposition. It is quite possible for you to go out and live your life with all of these things included, right now, and I want you to!
What I found was that most people needed a system to follow that would keep them accountable.
